Weekend Event Guide: Freak bikes, singlespeeding, the ‘Ovas’, and more

A "singlespeed adventure rally"? Yes please.

A “singlespeed adventure rally”? Yes please.

Yikes. This weekend is packed and Saturday should be mostly sunny, so finish up your Halloween costumes early and get outside. In fact, why not take your costume for a test ride? Whether you’re looking for eccentric or educational, there’s plenty to choose from.

Check out our weekend picks below and have fun out there!

Friday, October 21st

Art Exhibit: Annexation & Assimilation Along 82nd Ave – 6:00pm APANO/JADE Multicultural Space (8114 SE Division St)
This one-day only exhibition uses 20ft large-scale video projections, poster installations, oral histories and a theater performance to explore the fraught process of annexation and growth as experienced by disparate communities east of 82nd Ave. The result is an accelerating and visceral mash-up of Portland’s past and present along this boundary, which is at once both real and imagined. Free. Learn more here.

Dropout Club Monthly Ride – 9:30pm Col. Summers Park (SE 20th & Belmont)
Ten years strong, the Dropout Bicycle Club is the place to show off your bicycle oddities. This monthly ride is just one part of Freak Bike Fall, a full weekend of tall and small bike events. Come prepared for music, bikes, and fun. Costumes strongly encouraged all weekend. Learn more here.

Saturday, October 22nd

French Toast Ride – 10:00am 5734 SE Flavel Street
The name says it all. Eat french toast, ride bikes with smiling people. Everything that’s great about Portland’s bike culture in one morning. (Somebody eat a slice for me, I’ll be at the airport picking up my parents.) Please note, RSVP’s are appreciated and early arrival is not. Learn more here.

N.O.I.S.E. Ride – 12:00pm Fresh Pot (4001 N Mississippi)
What to bring: Costumes, dice, a single speed bike, your shred face and an appetite for lots of gnar. The 12th annual North Oregon International Single Speed Exhibition Ride will feature single track, jumps, a skills test, ally blasting, gravel grinding, feats of strength, and even some mystery. For an idea of what’s in store, check out Dylan VanWeelden’s gallery from last year’s competition, here. Learn more here.

EcoFilm Fest: Contromano – 9:15pm Hollywood Theatre (4122 NE Sandy Blvd)
This documentary dives into two very different bike shops in Turin, Italy, also home of Fiat Automobiles, as auto dominance declines. Profound, funny and real, Contromano is a testimony to the power of the bike as a tool of transformation: for the climate, for cities, and for the lives of individuals. Presented as part of The Portland EcoFilm Fest (Oct. 20-23). Take a peek at the trailer, here. In Italian with English subtitles. Learn more here.

Sunday, October 23rd

Film: Ovarian Psycos – 7:00pm Clinton Street Theater (2522 SE Clinton St)
Since forming in 2010 the “Ovas” cycle for the purpose of healing, to reclaim their East L.A. neighborhoods, and to create safer streets for women. “Whose streets? Our streets!” This documentary rides along to explore the group’s impact on their communities. Take a peek at the trailer, here. Also showing Saturday at 7:00pm. Learn more here.
