This is the time of year where some of us need the encouragement of others to get out and brave the elements. We’ve got a few group rides that might be just what you were looking for. Or, if you’d rather stay cozied up and off the bike this weekend, you can peruse some sales or party for a good cause.

Whatever you do, watch yourself out there. As the song goes, “The weather outside is frightful.”

Saturday, December 10th

Public Takeover of SE Division – 2:00 pm to 5:00 pm at SE Division and 82nd
In response to continued carnage Division and a lack of progress to improve its safety by the City of Portland, concerned members of our community and volunteers with Bike Loud PDX are taking things into their own hands. Join the protest and raise awareness for the unacceptable level of death and injury in the Jade District. More info here.

Riders to the Stars Ride – 4:00 to 7:00 pm at IKEA Cascade Station (10280 NE Cascades Pkwy)
Join a festive group ride that will head north into Vancouver to see the RGB Stars light display, known as one of the best holiday light displays in the region. It’s a choreographed music and light extravaganza! You’ll see lots of other ostentatious light displays on the way. Expect a 18-mile ride that will last around three hours — giving you plenty of time for a plate of Swedish meatballs and hot coffee at the store’s cafe when you return. Hosted by Puddlecycle. More info here.

Stream PDX Party and Fundraiser – 7:00 pm at XOXO Outpost (419 Northeast 10th Ave)
The BikePortland Podcast is on hiatus, but our friends from the Sprocket Podcast are going strong and need some support in their new home. They’ve moved their studio into an old Airstream trailer (with a few other great podcasts) and they are trying to raise money to make some improvements. This event will bring together podcasting lovers and makers of all types. More info here.

Sunday, December 11th

Holiday Express Ride – 10:30 am at Woodstock Park (SE 47th and Steele)
Join the Portland Wheelmen Touring Club and ride along the historic steam train that runs along the Springwater Corridor path. The eight-foot wheels and old-school train horn will astound and amaze you and the festive vibe will give your holiday spirit a boost. Expect 27 miles at an easy pace. More info here.

Kimmy Cross 2016 – 12:00 noon to 4:00 pm at BeerMongers Bottle Shop (1125 SE Division)
This second annual alleycross event remembers and celebrates Kim Matheson, a founding member of the BeerMongers Cycle Club who battled valiantly against cancer before it took her life on December 1st, 2015. The other goal is to raise money for the Melanoma International Foundation so there’s a $10 suggested donation to participate. Tons of prizes to be had from the raffle including a Soma Double Cross frame (size 56).
Our main raffle prize is a Soma Double Cross 56cm frame (w/o fork) from Cyclone! More info here.
