The weekend is almost here and it looks like we might stay dry. We could even have some sun and temps into the 60s!

We’ve got a great mix of offerings in the Guide this week — whether you’re an experienced racer or just starting out on two wheels.

Friday, March 29th

Breakfast on the Bridges – 7:00 to 9:00 am on Steel/Hawthorne/Tilikum bridges
Remember to give yourself a few extra minutes on your pedal into downtown Friday morning so you can stop, sip, snack and socialize with the wonderful volunteers from Shift who make this monthly tradition possible. More info here.

Saturday, March 30th

Piece of Cake Road Race – All day in Hubbard, Oregon (26 miles south of Portland)
Head to the smooth farm roads of Hubbard for some racing action. Course is a 13-mile loop that’s mostly flat. More info here.

First Timer’s Ride – 10:00 am at River City Bicycles (SE)
Let’s “Portland’s Best Bike Shop” take you on a chill, neighborhood cruise to get you comfortable on two wheels. Loaner bikes available! More info here.

Reach the Beach Saturday Series – 10:30 am at Gleason Boat Ramp on Marine Drive (NE)
Rike Like a Girl Cycling wants to help you get ready for Reach the Beach. This training ride will offer routes of varying length and is geared toward newcomers who are ready to work hard to improve endurance in a supportive environment. More info here.

Friends on Bikes Donut Ride – 10:00 am at Laurelhurst Park (NE)
This 3rd annual ride welcomes all women of color, trans, and gender non-conforming people of color. Eat (free!) donuts, drink coffee, and enjoy 13-mile jaunt through town. No-drop ride, which means no one gets left behind. More info here.

Oregon City Coffee Ride – 10:00 am at Woodstock Park (SE)
Curious about the Trolley Trail? Join the Portland Wheelmen Touring Club for an excursion down to Oregon City and see what all the buzz is about. More info here.

Lillstreet Throwdown : And Now For The Results…

Every challenge needs winners… and ribbons.. and a TROPHY!!! Right?
After twenty-eight challenges in just 10 weeks of class, we finally have some winners!!!
And surprisingly, we were just a dozen points difference between the top three places!!!

First off… the ribbons… all well-deserved in my book at least!!!

So let’s break it down a little bit more…

CONGRATULATIONS DONNA… who came into the LILLSTREET THROWDOWN
as the “dark horse” and the only primarily handbuilder in the class. I must admit I was questioning if she would be able to keep up with the wheelthrowers… but she SHINED!!! Her creativity, boundless enthusiasm, and willingness to try anything made her the winner!!!

Huge thanks to all of my wonderful students this session! I had so much fun “playing” with all of you this session! Thank you for always sucking it up and playing along with the challenges. Thanks for the camaraderie & supportive nature you all brought to the class. I’ve always thought that pottery classes should be fun, social and community building… and we’ve proven once again that they can be! Thanks again for the great class.

YOU GUYS ROCKED IT!!!

Lillstreet Throwdown : Our Final “Challenge”

It was the last night of class, and we had already critiqued & judged the final project…. but I still had one more trick up my sleeves. With two of my studetns getting married this Spring, and wanting to make ceramic vases to share with all of their guests… I figured what better way than with a THROWDOWN assembly line?! So we all buckled down and started cranking out as many vases as we could during the remainder of class. Everyone had a great time working & chatting together. A perfect way to end our class!

And our lovely “hand model” Susan…

And here’s Jacob, the Groom-To-Be, putting some final touches on a cylinder by carving some patterns into it with our favorite DiamondCore Carving Tool.

And here’s Molly, the Bride-To-Be, who “apparently” didn’t get the memo that they were all making small vases out of extruded tubes?! What’s with that???

And here they are by the end of class… approximately half of what they’re hoping to get finished in the next month or so… as the wedding is later this Spring!!!

Lillstreet Throwdown : Creamer & Sugar Sets

After the HUGE success of the BEATLES Salt & Pepper Shakers…
I decided that we should stick with the theme… and go for The Beatles again!
But this time I allowed them to choose their own song… which many of them said was tougher than when they were assigned… but the “final twist” was that they needed to make a sugar & creamer set with a tray this time!

DAVID – kind of amazing as this is David’s FIRST lidded jar!

SUSAN – simple & subtle as the “nestle” together… spooning… snuggling…

DONNA – love the addition of the copper border… although I would have liked it as a street.

CLAIRE - simple & clean

PATTI – and yes, that green pattern is completely carved away by hand! CRAZY COOL!!!

MOLLY – recognize the sugar bowl?… it’s a sphere from last week’s sphere trowing challenge!

RYAN – continuing his theme… of “spice” packets… remember, it started with pepper!

TERESA - loving the details on the sugar… the windshield wipers are killin’ me!!!

TATIANA – lovely surface decoration depicting all parts & lyrics in her song.

And now for our TOP TWO!!!

TAYLOR – once again utilizing the extruder!

JON – incredible “animation” & whimsy… and his first ever hand-built human sculpture!
